The Power of Team Partnerships

By

Expert Author Richard Highsmith
The ability to work with others... to build partnerships was the cornerstone to human society. Without it we would still be foraging and hunting the forests and plains alone. Not only are partnerships vital to progress; they can be unbelievably rewarding to all partners. Let's take a look at the life value of partnerships.
1. "A candle loses nothing when it lights another candle." - Father James Heller. Sharing information, ideas, encouragement, laughter and goals costs you nothing. Individuals develop a belief of paucity or plenty. If you subscribe to the paucity outlook, you believe in limitations. You stockpile assets and worry you will run out. The outlook of plentitude teaches there is always enough to go around. You share willingly what you have with your partners. If you keep what you have from your partner, you will receive nothing. Sharing with your partner reflects an attitude that encourages reciprocity. In this relationship all partners benefit.
2. "He who obtains has little. He who scatters has much." - Lao-Tzu. If you work with your teammates to help them obtain their goals, your successes will follow. More than a year ago I coached a friend on improving his sales presentations. He won an award earlier this year as one of the Top Salesmen. He valued my assistance and told a Senior Vice President at his company about how much I had helped him with his public speaking skills. The VP has since contacted me to discuss public speaking classes for the full sales force. My original intent was simply to help my friend further his professional accomplishments. Now, my own training business is being rewarded. And an entire sales force will get coaching for their future success. When you are seen as generous and giving, others respond in a similar manner to you. So in giving we learn about ourselves and create supportive relationships on our team.
3. "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." - Sir Winston Churchill. Partnerships among teammates build a win-win environment. You almost never accomplish alone what you can do with partners. I once owned a manufacturing company and was responsible for doing all the pricing. On a quote for a large project I made a significant mistake in estimating expenses. Unfortunately we won the bid, but were going to end up losing money. I called my leadership team together and laid out my error. Each manager found a way to cut the costs on the project and we ended up breaking even. Alone I would have lost money. My partners pulled us out of the nose-dive.
Highly functioning teams not only achieve more as a group, but they learn and benefit from the relationships that form during the process. Reach out to your teammates and create those partnerships.
